• OPTIMIZING MEMBRANE PERFORMANCE WITH CHEMICAL EXPERTISE

Membrane Chemicals

LPE specializes in the selection and optimization of membrane chemicals for RO and NF systems, covering both pretreatment chemical programs and cleaning-in-place (CIP) maintenance strategies to ensure stable operation and extended membrane life.

Overview

Membrane filtration systems such as reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are widely used in water treatment and industrial separation processes.

To ensure stable operation, high recovery, and long membrane life, proper chemical management is essential.

Membrane chemicals are typically used in two main areas:

  • Pretreatment chemicals, which protect membranes during operation
  • Cleaning chemicals, which restore membrane performance during maintenance

Membrane Limitations That Require Chemical Treatment

During operation, membrane systems may encounter several water quality limitations that can lead to fouling or scaling.

Scaling from dissolved solid: water with high concentrations of dissolved salts can cause scaling on the membrane surface, particularly:

  • Calcium and magnesium
  • Sulphate and phosphate
  • Silica

These salts can precipitate and form scale layers, reducing permeate flow and increasing system pressure.

Organic matter and biological material: organic matter and biological materials in the feed water can accumulate on the membrane surface, forming organic fouling layers that reduce membrane efficiency.

Oxidation and disinfection challenges: certain oxidizing agents, such as chlorine, may damage RO and NF membranes if not properly controlled.

PRETREATMENT AND CLEANING CHEMICALS

Pretreatment Chemicals

To control these challenges and maintain smooth operation, several types of chemicals are commonly used before the membrane system.

Antiscaling agents: Prevent mineral precipitation and scaling on membrane surfaces.

Anti-biofouling and organic fouling control agents: Help control microbial growth and organic fouling.

Biofilm disruptors: Reduce biofilm formation and improve system hygiene.

Dechlorinating agents: Remove oxidants such as chlorine to protect membrane materials.

Membrane Cleaning Chemicals

Over time, fouling and scaling may still occur. Cleaning chemicals are therefore used to restore membrane performance during maintenance.

Common cleaning chemicals include:

  • Scale cleaners for removing mineral deposits
  • Organic and biofouling cleaners for removing organic matter and microbial fouling
  • Biofilm removal chemicals to break down biofilm layers on the membrane surface

Proper cleaning protocols help extend membrane life and maintain system performance.
